History
Baku Music Academy named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli, previously called Azerbaijan State Conservatory, was established on August 21, 1921. The great founder of Azerbaijani classical music and professional composition school Uzeyir Hajibeyli played a pivotal role in the establishment of Baku Music Academy. He was an outstanding personality having a priceless place in the development of Azerbaijani music culture and music education.
Famous composers such as Gara Garayev, Fikrat Amirov, Jovdat Hajıyev, Arif Melikov, and many others – including Khayyam Mirzazade, Firangiz Alizade, Vasif Adıgezalov, Jahangir Jahangirov, Rauf Hajiyev, Tofiq Quliyev, Suleyman Alesgerov, Musa Mirzayev, Azer Rzayev, İsmayıl Hajıbeyov, Elnara Dadashova, Azer Dadashov - have significantly contributed to the propagation of Azerbaijani music all over the world. The esteemed Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev founded a new national performing school by actively combining Eastern and Western traditions.
In the 1920s, an Eastern Department was established on Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s initiative at Baku Music Academy. Thus, folk instruments were given greater impetus in the development of national music culture.
A new fundamental base for students of the Conservatory – School-studio was founded under the Conservatory in 1981. Many important events and numerous conferences have been organized in the Opera Studio since 1984.
Since 1991, the rector of Baku Music Academy has been Farhad Badalbeyli, a great pianist, People’s Artist of USSR and Azerbaijan, laureate of the State award, and the first laureate of the international competition in Azerbaijani performing school (1981 Portugal). In 1988 the Union of Music Figures of Azerbaijan was founded by his initiative.
The educational system of Baku Music Academy has also joined the latest reforms by implementing the multilevel educational system and Bologna process. Many very famous foreign professors such as M.Rоstropovich, B.Davidovich, D.Siтkovетskiy, M.Kabalye, E.Obraztsova, İ. Moniqetti, Yo Yo Ma, D.Mogilevski, M.Vengerov, N.Koqan, A.Bankas, A. Bonduryanski etc. have been invited to Baku Music Academy to hold master classes and seminars.
BMA is highly interested in protecting and promoting a variety of cultural expressions, stimulating dialogue among cultures aimed at providing broader and balanced cultural exchanges, promoting respect for a variety of forms of cultural expression and increasing the understanding of the value of such diversity on local, national and international levels. The logic of regional and transnational integration coming out of Bologna appears to underpin many of the international projects and initiatives across a broad range of countries and serves as a coordinating body for mobility agreements and scholarships. Subsequently, BMA aims to strengthen relationships with other Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) and at widening the social and economic environment.
Baku Music Academy is currently the only higher education institution in Azerbaijan that has been implementing the LoLa (Low Latency Audio-visual streaming System) project with the support of GEANT (European Association of Science and Education Networks) within the framework of the EaPConnect project of the European Commission. The project enables users to organize real-time performances among several institutions at a remote distance with very low latency.
In addition to several previously implemented projects, Baku Music Academy is currently realizing the EURASIA project with the Grieg Academy of the University of Bergen (Norway) for developing expertise in the Artistic Research programme and Creative Spark project with East London University (United Kingdom) funded by the British Council for developing entrepreneurship skills among university students.
